Where is Camp Lakota located?

Camp Lakota is located in Wurtsboro, NY in the foothills of the
Catskill Mountains. The Camp is approximately 15 minutes west of
Middletown, New York. We are just 90 minutes from New York City.

What size is the bed? (Our most popular question)

Our camp mattress is 73 inches long and 30 inches wide.

Where do I send the mail?

If you are sending mail or packages to our campers during the summer
please send them to our summer address which is 56 Park Road
Wurtsboro, NY 12790. Please be sure to list your campers name, you
do not need the bunk number, we know every camper.

If you are trying to send us something during the winter please send all

How big is Camp Lakota?

Camp Lakota is laid out on 200 lush acres in the Catskill Mountains and
sits along side glorious Masten Lake. Camp Lakota is comprised of acres
and acres of trails for hiking, horseback riding and campouts.

Is Camp Lakota ACA accredited?

Camp Lakota is proud to be an accredited member of the
American Camping Association (ACA). We just went through our
re-certification and passed with very high "scores"

How many children are there in camp?

We accept 190 boys and 190 girls each summer, for a total of 380
campers. It is our goal to know each camper as individuals.

How many campers will be in my child’s bunk?

There are approximately 8 –10 campers in each bunk.

How are campers assigned to a bunk?

Campers are assigned according to age and grade. With
special attention given to the ratio of new and returning
camper.

How old are the bunk counselors?

Our bunk counselors are college age students. Every staff
member goes through a professional background check and
every staff member completes our mandatory orientation training
program.

Where do your counselors come from?

The majority of our counselors come from across the U.S. and many
of our counsleors were once campers. In addition, we have
a small group of counselors who come from Great Britain, Scotland
and even Australia

What type of screening is done before hiring a camp
staff member?

Each staff person is carefully screened before being hired. The
process includes an application, extensive reference checks and a
criminal background check. We truly believe that we hire the
‘cream of the crop’ as your child’s safety and personal welfare is
our paramount concern. Many of our counselors are returnees
and many were former campers. It is our goal to hire counselors
with abundant experience in their area of expertise.

How long is each activity period?

Each activity period is approximately 1 hour. Time is given
between each period for campers and staff to move from activity to
activity.

What do you do on a rainy day?

We have a pre-planned rainy day schedule that we can
switch to at a moments notice. Camp Lakota has many
indoor facilities that are geared for rainy day activities. Our
recreation center is available for a wide variety of
indoor sports.. Other indoor facilities include a dance studio,
gymnastics center, fitness center, dining hall, canteen building,
multiple art studios and over 40 cabins. With years of experience
we keep our campers happy, rain or shine!

How competitive is the program?

Camp Lakota’s emphasis is on fun and learning. For those
who are looking for a more competitive atmosphere, we provide
intercamp games several times a week through the Sullivan
County Camp Athletic League. Every camper that wants to join
our intercamp teams is guaranteed a spot.

Are your swim and waterfront instructors certified
lifeguards?

All of our swim and waterfront instructors are American Red Cross
Certified lifeguards. We have very clear rules and safety
regulations that are enforced at all times. Each camper will participate
in our Red Cross swim program and receive their certification
cards.

Do the campers put on theatrical shows?

Our campers put on musicals, revues and several talent shows
throughout the summer. The shows are performed on our
fully equipped stage with professional sound and lighting in the
recreation hall. Everyone who wants to be in our shows will have a
part. Many of our campers become part of the backstage
crew helping with lighting, scenery and costumes.

What are the special in-camp events?

Each summer Camp Lakota has an exciting variety of special
events. These include our Water Canrnival and fireworks on
July 4th, Tribal War, College Olympics, and all camp trips. Each summer concludes with our tradition of Color War!

Do the campers have an opportunity to hike and
camp-out?

Each bunk will have several opportunities to go on one of our
exciting high adventure hikes led by our experienced nature staff.
Our hikes are both fun and educational as we explore some of the
Catskill Region’s most beautiful waterfalls and scenic areas.
Each bunk will also have the opportunity to camp out in tents on
our very own camp grounds.

What are the meals like?

Campers sit at their own assigned table with their bunkmates and
counselors. Our dining hall service is buffet style. The meals are well
balanced and plentiful. In addition to our main courses, we have
delicious substitutions which are always available, these include a
make-your-own salad bar and pasta bar at each lunch and dinner meal.
While we are not a “peanut free” camp we are very peanut conscious
and can accomodate most dietary concerns.

How do we run our infirmary?

We are very proud of our fully equipped health center which is always
available to all campers. After breakfast and dinner we have "Health Call"
for campers who are not feeling well. We are staffed with
physicians and Registered Nurses. The Orange Regional Hospital in
Middletown, New York is only 12 minutes from the camp and Crystal Run
Urgent Care Center is just 5 minutes away in Rock Hill.


When is a parent notified if their camper visits the Infirmary.

If a camper needs anything more than a band-aid our medical
staff will notify you right away.


What items are sold at the Canteen?

Our Canteen offers a wide variety of snacks with many healthy choices.
Campers visit the canteen either after lunch or in the evening depending
on age. Visits to the canteen are supervised and campers receive a
drink and a snack. The canteen does not require any tickets or cash.
We also have other items and supplies available which can be purchased
on campus in our Office Store, for example, campers can buy
items such as batteries, toiletries, envelopes and stamps.

Will Campers need pocket money?

Its practical for campers to keep a small amount of cash
in our office. Our staff will keep it secure in their individual
envelope. Cash is useful for batteries and stamps from
the Camp Store and for souveniers on camp trips.

Should Campers keep cash or valuables in their cabin?

All cash, passports and other important items must be kept in
our camp safe located in the camp office. Each camper will have
an daily opportunity to access their envelope.

How is the laundry handled?

Camp Lakota has its own laundry service on premises. A
camper’s laundry will be picked up once a week, washed, dried,
and folded and returned within 24 hours.

What is the camp’s telephone policy?

For a smooth transition from “home life” to “camp life” it is
important that campers refrain from calls home during their first
week. After the first week, the campers can set up two phone
calls home per session.

Can Parents email their children at camp?

Parents can send an unlimited amount of emails to their children.
Emails are printed, folded and sorted by bunk. Emails are
delivered to campers with the daily mail. As camp approaches,
we will provide you with the exact email address to use for the
upcoming summer.

What if we have an emergency after office hours?

If you need to reach us after office hours, please call our
summer camp office (845) 888-5611 and the greeting will give you
a 24 hour contact number for one of our directors.

Do you provide transportation to and from camp?

We provide chartered bus service to camp from several different New
York and New Jersey departure areas. Our buses run on the
first day of camp and the last day of camp. If you are going home
after 4 weeks, or if you are coming to camp for our final 3 week session,
we ask that you travel by car.

Can we bring our child directly to the camp?

If you live in a location where it is not convenient to get to our bus
service, please notify us to make special arrangements to drive
your child directly to camp. Otherwise we do ask that all
campers arrive by bus.

Is it possible to come see the camp in person and receive a tour?

The Camp is open for touring all year long and we would be happy
to arrange to give you and your family a tour at your convenience.
