Well, every day will bring different, new, and exciting experiences, but here’s a good idea of what’s in store for you on a day in the life at Lakota.
First, let’s talk about where you’ll live. All campers at Lakota live in modern camp bunks together with about 8-10 bunkmates and your counselors. Think of your bunkmates as family, headed by friendly, college-age counselors who are there to help and talk to you about any need that comes up, big or small. We usually have at least three counselors in each bunk. Always feel free to speak with your counselors - they are there to support and guide you every day, all summer long!
In the bunk, you’ll have your own bed and a cubby to store clothes and belongings. Each bunk has a spacious bathroom with two or more private showers, two private stalls, two sinks, and plenty of hot water. You’ll also find additional cubby spaces in the bathroom, be able to place your stuff on our sink vanity top and smile in front of the mirrors, of course. No televisions or air conditioning. At Lakota, we treasure our fresh mountain air and the great green outdoors!
We encourage you to try new things and take advantage of all the best of the many great programs we have to offer. That’s why we’ve planned a great program which is both a mix of scheduled and elective activities. Our program includes seven activity periods each day: three in the morning, three in the afternoon, and one after dinner. Three of these periods are Electives, which means, “Your Choice!” You get to choose a preferred activity three times a day.
Now let's take a look at a fun-filled Lakota day…
Your day begins with..
Morning Reveille: We get dressed, brush our teeth and head to the Main Lawn for Line-Up.
That’s where we gather round the Flagpole to hear morning announcements, raise the flag, and get ready for a fabulous day!
Next, we head straight to Lakota’s lively Dining Hall for a hearty, nutritious Breakfast that may consist of Waffles, Eggs, French Toast, Chocolate Chip Pancakes, Hot and Cold Cereals, and lots more --what’s your favorite? You’ll need lots of energy to keep up with your highly active day!
After breakfast, you’ll return to your bunk for Clean Up Time.
We ask all campers to be responsible : Make your bed, straighten your cubbies, tidy up your area…then do your job assignment as posted on the Clean-Up Wheel on your bunk wall. We all work as a team to prepare the bunk for daily inspection, that's right.
Remember: Our bunks are our home away from home, and we want them to feel homey, as well as stay as clean as possible at all times. FYI: We have a professional staff come in every day to clean and sanitize the bathroom facilities.
Finally, you’re ready to jump in and start the fun morning activities, periods one, two and three. During elective periods it's your choice, maybe play sports, do arts and crafts, or try a specialty activity like horseback riding or zipline, as just a few examples. We know you will also love your scheduled periods, because the activities are fantastic and it’s a great time for building friendships with your bunkmates.
After our morning activities it's time for lunch, you’ll wash up and walk back to the Dining hall for a delicious Luncheon Buffet. Lunch might be Pizza, Grilled Cheese with Tomato Soup, Make-Your-Own Heroes, Chicken Nuggets, Macaroni and Cheese and we always have a great salad bar. Yes, we also have a variety of lunch alternatives such as tuna and egg salad, pasta, and vegetarian dishes. Yum!
After lunch, it’s time for Rest Hour - you’ve guessed it - we all head back to the bunks with our counselors, relax, read, tell stories, and write letters home. Letter Writing Day is three times a week, and we receive Mail Delivery at our bunks every day.
Now that you’ve had a good rest, you’re ready to venture out onto the fields for three more great afternoon activities during periods four, five and six. (and there’s even a short snack break in the afternoon). Then, carry on with waterskiing, boating, soccer, tennis, dance ..The list is endless, so please check out our activities page…
Although you’ll probably want to stay outside all day, the PA speaker will soon call you back to the bunks for Wash Up before Dinner. You’re good and hungry now, so, it’s back to the Dining Hall where dinner might be: Meatballs and Spaghetti, Chicken Dishes, Turkey Night, Chinese Dinner, Lakota’s Famous Hamburger and Hotdog Barbecues, a wonderful dinner salad bar, just to name a few. We know you’ll be very satisfied with the many varied food choices we have to offer.
Following the scrumptious meal, you’ll head out to our seventh period, Free Play, when you might play a soccer game, feed and care for animals in Nature Shack, go fishing, or just hang with your friends in one of many supervised areas. You can play a game of catch or ping pong, read a book, or sit around and share a laugh.
Next, it’s Shower Hour back at the bunks. Wash and get refreshed for the nights evening activity, a different theme each night. Our evening activities include all camp games that everyone can participate in as well as outside entertainment. We will also have wonderful stage shows that the campers perform and fantastic talent shows. We'll have a few surprises too!
If it’s Canteen Night, you get to have a snack and a drink with your friends. Our youngest campers have already had their canteen and head back to the bunks for lights out. For our older campers, they will have supervised time with their friends until it's their curfew, then it's back to the bunks.
Well, it’s light out now! Hit the pillow and sleep tight! You’ll want to wake up and bounce right into the next great day of fun and happy adventures at Camp Lakota!
