What’s the History of Camp Lakota and Bergen County?

Camp Lakota derives its name from the Lakota Native American tribe, who cherished nature’s beauty and believed in the power of strong alliances. “Lakota” means “Friendly and United,” an ideal reflection of the spirit that defines our camp. Founded in 1924 on the historic grounds of a Sullivan County estate and the Mamakating Park Hotel, Camp Lakota has been under continuous family ownership for a century. It’s always been about family here, providing safe, nurturing, and exciting summers for co-ed campers.

Since the Mindich Family acquired the camp in 1985, they’ve had the honor of caring for generations of campers, and they’re excited to continue this legacy. As Lakota has grown, so have our facilities, now featuring modern studio and performance spaces, pools, athletic fields, and courts, including our newly renovated tennis and pickleball facility!
